The Day of the Wedding

A day in the Life of….. Michael Higgins, Wedding Co-ordinator.

Everything has been leading up to this day! All the months of planning, organizing and then re-planning have resulted in this, the most spectacular day of their lives. Every little detail has been scrutinized and now, at 5pm on a sunny Friday evening, the wedding car is pulling up to the sparkling glass front of the Kenmare Bay Hotel. As the red carpet is rolled out and the Bride steps out of the car, I can’t help but feel a bit of pride in all the work that went into making this day happen.

The photographer snaps away and Tom Meagher, Deputy Manager steps forward with a bottle of Champagne for the Bridal party.

Behind the scenes things are not so tranquil.

Eileen the Executive Chef is in full swing with her team of international chefs creating 300 meals using the finest ingredients. To anyone entering the heat it would look like chaos but each chef knows exactly what is expected and moves with extreme efficiency.

Alan the Bar Manager is busy directing his staff into the different bars and ensuring each guest is having the best possible time.

After a few more photos, it’s time for the dinner call. While Tom walks around the lobby and bar ringing the bell, I give one final check with the Bride and Groom that everything is going according to plan. As is the usual with weddings, the guests are slow to start moving upstairs but eventually everyone is seated and we are ready to announce the new happy couple.  “Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Bride and Groom!”

The Bagpipes are blowing and everyone stands to applaud them as they make their grand entrance into the Reception. Once the Bride and Groom have taken their seats, the Priest stands to say Grace.

For the next two hours Tom controls the waiting staff on the floor, while I continuously check with the Bride and Groom, as well as each individual guest that everything is to their satisfaction.

After the meal is over there is a short break while the floor is rearranged for the band. This is approximately fifteen minutes and the band starts up without delay.

My work is done for this wedding and the only thing I can think of is the fact that I have to do this all over again tomorrow.
